Homeschooling Tip of the Day
Combine activities into a service project. Many colleges now look for evidence of volunteer work, and actually using the material you are learning helps get a lot of children interested.
Suggestions for Projects
- Volunteer for your local wildlife rescue organization: Your child can learn about the animals he is rescuing, the habitat that it needs to survive, threats to the animal, math skills when measuring food and tracking weight, language arts if your child keeps a blog of the project.
- Have a drive to collect old blankets, sheets and toys for the dog shelter. Your child will develop marketing, advertising, public speaking skills, use a bit of math figuring out how many blankets, toys, pounds of food are necessary.
- Create a campaign to encourage health-wise choices in other children. You can choose topics such as nutrition, hand washing, exercise, sleep, bicycle safety, whatever. Skills learned include: art for the posters, marketing, advertising, biology, some math
- Build a wildlife habitat in your yard. You will learn about sprouting plants from seeds, choosing eco-friendly plants, xeriscaping, pH of soil, simple shop skills if you build bird houses, and, again, if you add a blod too it, you child will work on her writing skills.
- Create a scale model of the solar system with your city’s permission, you can do it in a local park or along a hiking trail.
- Start a photography club and have your child learn about anything he take a picture of
- Help your child start writing a weekly newsletter that is distributed at local libraries for other children to read
Just about anything your child is intersted in can be turned into a project. Have him write the steps for the project down. Contact your local volunteer center to find out what types of projects need to be done.
