Notch and Turner
The boys are doing well. I am finding that Turner loves to be a lap-rabbit—he will sit there and be pet as long as you will have him. The nipping incidents I mentioned in the the last entry have been eliminated. I have found that Notch is very motivated by treats (lettuce, carrots, craisins, banannas, raisins), but Turner is a bit more willful. To date, I have not really found a reward that motivates him. Their training is going slowly, but that is my fault. Adequate obedience training requires dedicated work at least 15 minutes a day—I have been slack.
We played a game with Notch yesterday and hid treats around the room. He seemed to enjoy that.
The boys are getting a bit less shy. They do not scamper away when you try to pet them or pick them up. Our house is chaotic (2 small kids, a cat, 3 dogs and various contractors as we are remodeling), but they still venture out on their own to check things out when it is quiet. I am trying to bring out their natural curiosity. I am going to move their “home” (food and stuff) into my daughter’s room as they seem to have decided they prefer that over the boys room. I am hoping that will help out a bit too.
Other good points about these rabbits: With the exception of books that are left on the floor (grrr….) They have not destroyed/chewed anything that is not theirs. They are provided a phonebook, a cardboard box filled with hay, and a few toys to divert them from real books and we have not had any more problems. They are like my cats always were—You can buy the most expensive toy in the world and they do not want it, but wad up a piece of paper or get an empty toilet paper roll and they are in Heaven. They are larger, so they feel like great big old teddy bears when you hold them. They like being out in the yard and have learned to stay in their play area (a 8×4 log jungle gym that we put together for them).
